We came upon Bodegas Campillo at the 2000 London Wine Trade Fare, thanks to a rather enthusiastic Mike Anthony (Champanys) who was raving about the range of Riojas he had just tasted so we decided to take a look. After half an hour of slurping and spitting, nodding of heads and large smiles, we discussed the agency for Scotland and here it is. The whole range of Riojas can only be described as amazing.
Bodegas Campillo is based in the heart of La Rioja Alavesa and enjoys excellent conditions for the production of ripe, concentrated, healthy grapes. Fermentation is temperature-controlled in stainless steel and ageing is carried out in 60% American oak and 40% French oak. The ageing process both in wood and bottle is always longer than that demanded by the regulating council in Rioja and thus the wines are superbly creamy with lots of complexity and show great style.
