Bandol, which lies between Marseilles and Toulon, is often called the most privileged appellation of France. Certainly the scenic beauty of this storybook area offers unsurpassed views of the azure coloured Mediterranean, with the vineyards spread out over the hillsides overlooking the sea. We have long been fans of Domaine Tempier which is, arguably, Bandol's most sought after wine.
As Robert Parker puts it, "There seems to be no doubt amongst connoisseurs that the best red wines come from Domaine Tempier"
The main grape variety is Mourvèdre with the vines terraced due to the steep hillside. The two best vineyards are La Tourtine and La Migoua. Absolutely no chemical fertilisers are used and the reds spend up to 30 months in oak "foudres" Only allocated in tiny amounts, the wines are amazing.
